How you make impact as a Firmware Designer

As a firmware designer your main responsibility is to create and modify firmware designs for programmable logic, for example FPGA’s, including the hardware/software interface of the machine. Your tasks include specifying and documenting requirements, implementing and simulating VHDL code as well as testing the firmware in test setups and in the machine module. You are the first point of contact for VHDL‑related questions. You will work closely with designers of all disciplines (software, hardware, (electro)‑mechanical).

What you bring to the team

You maintain good contact with colleagues, suppliers and customers, listen well and ask questions. You have a broad interest and experience in firmware technology as well as hardware and software for embedded systems design, and you make well‑founded design choices together with colleagues, using best practices and industry standards.

  • Bachelor's degree or master's degree in electrical engineering.
  • At least 5 years of industrial experience in VHDL for FPGA design (VHDL RTL, synthesis, compilation and timing closure).
  • Experience with FPGA design flow (Altera Quartus/Xilinx ISE) and functional & gate simulation using Mentor Modelsim and/or Questa Sim.
  • Experience debugging tools (ILA ChipScope, Signaltap) and lab equipment.
  • Familiar with hardware development tools (e.g., Spice, Matlab) and programming languages (e.g., C/C++, Java, Python).
  • Affinity to work and discuss with hardware and software engineers on a technical level.
  • Team player, analytical, pragmatic, creative and proactive.
  • Good communication skills and proficient in English.
  • Good time‑management and priority‑setting abilities.

Your daily responsibilities

As a firmware designer you will work together with your project team as the VHDL expert, developing electronic solutions in consultation with customers.
