For our technical traineeship that will start 12th of September 2016, we are looking for ambitious technical graduates who share our passion for water, technology, offshore (engineering) and wind energy.
The traineeship
Our technical traineeship is an excellent stepping stone in your career and an ideal chance to get to know various aspects of the marine contracting, dredging, offshore and offshore wind sector in a short space of time. By working in various departments and on projects both in the Netherlands and abroad, you'll get to know Van Oord, your colleagues and our projects.
The programme takes one year. After finalizing your traineeship you will work on our international projects (dredging, offshore or offshore wind), on one of our office locations abroad, at our Ship Management Department, Estimating and Engineering department or the Quality Health Safety & Environment department.
- (Almost) a technical graduate in civil engineering, offshore & dredging engineering, mechanical engineering, mining, maritime technology, physical geography, engineering in coastal environment, construction management and engineering, electrical engineering, technical business administration (the last only combined with a technical secondary vocational degree), QHSE related.
- a maximum of three years of work experience.

‘As a trainee, I moved to a different department approximately every two months. That gave me a chance to find out what happens behind the scenes at Van Oord, as well as the chance to meet employees all over the world. It also gave me a good idea of what my future job would be like. However, the most important thing, once I’d chosen my specialism was that I could see things from the perspective of other business units.’
‘My first project as a trainee was Palm Jumeirah Beaches in Dubai. I worked as a Superintendent on the backhoe dredger IJzeren Hein and as an Engineer for rock installation. I was then placed with the Offshore Wind Projects business unit, where I helped budget various tenders. I learned a lot during both projects, but what I’m most proud of is the rock installation method that I developed for the Dubai project. I also have fond memories of studying underwater noise levels generated by pile-driving offshore wind farm foundations.’
‘What I learned during my traineeship is still very useful in my present position, Superintendent in the Operations Department. I’m familiar with the customs and values of various nationalities and I can take on many different types of work on project sites. For example, I substitute for the Project Engineer when he’s absent, I take part in progress meetings, I make sure information is passed on, I come up with new working methods, and so on. The work environment is often hectic and every day is a new challenge. Thanks to my traineeship, I have a rock-solid basis.’
