Member of the Financial Study Association Rotterdam, attended a Flow Traders In-House Day in January 2012. Here is an account of her experiences
The day started off with two presentations that provided a lot of information, including an explanation of the application process, a description of what a typical day of a Trader consists of, details on working abroad, and team building activities. The presentations were very useful and provided me with a lot of information concerning the company and the daily activities of a trader.
The Trading Challenge gave us a firsthand experience of the kind of quick thinking a Trader needs to apply when reacting to alterations in the market. I enjoyed the Trading Challenge a lot, as it again provided more insight into a trader’s world. The day ended with a nice lunch in the lounge area, which could be better described as ‘a man’s dream’, as it was filled with arcade games, a poker table, and all kinds of game consoles you can imagine. This made me conclude that within Flow there is a time for work but also for relaxation at appropriate times and team building and competition with co-workers in the game room. Overall, I enjoyed my visit at Flow Traders as it gave me a clear view of the company’s activities and a trader’s daily work.

In the morning we were courteously greeted with coffee and snacks, and got a chance to play video games while waiting for the Trading Challenge to start. During the day the traders gave two presentations: the first provided an overview of the company and the second provided insight into various trading methods and strategies at a basic level. The Trader explained the relevant trading methods in a lucid manner and the recruiters were extremely approachable and very candidly answered questions about the company.
We had the opportunity to see the Flow Traders trading floor. Once we entered the space we were overwhelmed by all the computers and ringing telephones. What impressed me most was the intense collaboration between the Traders. I was able to see that Flow Traders puts a high emphasis on teamwork, which is what differentiates the company from other trading firms I have visited. I really saw, in action at Flow Traders, the environment and dynamic that similar companies try to convey in their promotional videos. All-in-all, I felt warmly welcomed by the Flow Traders staff, and I would recommend you to sign-up for one of their Trading Challenges!
The Flow Traders Trading Challenge offers applicants the opportunity to learn more about our way of trading. A Senior Trader presents and walks through an analysis of real world examples of products and market strategies. During the challenge, participants will compete against each other by identifying trading opportunities in a series of market simulations. The “winner” of each challenge will receive a prize, and the most promising participants who match the Junior Trader profile will be added to the Flow Traders Talent Pool and invited to Flow Traders Student activities during the academic year. After the challenge, the participants have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with our Junior Traders during an informal lunch.
