Do you have what it takes to become our next trader at Optiver? Sven Hubens (25) started in March 2011 as a trader at Optiver, his first job after graduating at the TU Eindhoven.
Why did you choose to work as a trader at Optiver?
When I was a child, I was already very interested in financial markets and started trading some stocks myself; I always had the drive to become a trader. During the last year of my study Technology Management I started to orientate myself on a career within trading. I’m a fast thinker, quick with numbers and that’s why I was immediately drawn to Optiver. During a company presentation I felt attracted to the dynamic and informal atmosphere of the company, combined with winners mentality and the possibility to grow fast within the organisation.
What are your main tasks as a trader?
I price and trade financial options, using computational models en market information to estimate the value of the product. We provide liquidity by providing quotes to the market, a buy- and a sell price. Next to that, I manage my trading positions and assess the trading risks involved. Within my team we mainly trade fixed income and currencies, for example German Bunds and the EUR/Dollar.
How did you experience your first months at Optiver?
As an Optiver ‘ trainee’ you will start with an intensive three month training period. During your first month you learn everything about the theory behind trading, but you’re expected to apply it directly into practice. In the second month the trading simulation starts and you’ll learn how trading actually works outside your study books. During this period your insight into trading will be extensively tested. After two months you’ll obtain a spot on the trading floor within one of our teams. The learning curve is steep, after three months I traded my own ‘desk’.
What distinguishes Optiver from other companies?
I see Optiver as a young, informal and international company with like-minded people, working together towards the same common goal. This, combined with the diversity in background and nationalities, is for me the perfect culture I would like to work in. Besides that, at Optiver I can actually execute my passion: trading. You will not work on presentations until 2 am, you will not be serving coffee whole day, you’re actually trading. For me it’s the perfect company to work for, with the opportunity to grow fast and getting the responsibilities to make a difference
Do you have what it takes?
Are you competitive and a fast decision-maker under pressure? Do you have a flair for numbers, a passion for financial markets and a competitive nature? You might be our next trader at Optiver. Apply for the Optiver Trading Master Class on May 23 & 24 2013 in Amsterdam.
